Item No.: 10209 Price : SOLD
Item : ORIGINAL, CIVIL WAR ERA COLT MODEL 1851 NAVY REVOLVER, .36 CALIBER
Description :
This is an original Colt Model 1851 Navy .36 Caliber Percussion Revolver manufactured in 1863. Earning its name from the Naval battle scene engraved on the cylinder, the '51 Navy was Colt's primary medium caliber revolver in the percussion era. Produced from 1850 until 1873, it was enormously popular and saw extensive use during the American Civil War by combatants on both sides. Thousands were carried into the Great American West both before and after the war. They traveled to the Gold Fields, along the Oregon Trail, and into every cow town in the West. Wild Bill Hickock favored the '51 Navy and carried a pair, butt forward, drawing the charges and reloading them each morning. This revolver is in antique fair to good condition. It has an overall brown patina with just traces of finish in protected areas. There is no silver plating left on the grip straps which have a nice dark bronze patina. The revolver has all-matching numbers except for the wedge which is unnumbered. Mechanically, it needs a little work. It cocks properly but the cylinder does not turn or advance, The bore and chambers are dark but mostly smooth and the rifling is strong along the barrel's length. The grips are in fair condition with a large chip on the toe of the left grip. There is a tiny brass heart inlaid upside down on the left grip. This is a good example of a well-used wartime Colt Navy. Stock no. 29705
