FINE 18TH CENTURY FLINTLOCK PISTOL, MARKED J.J. BER, .62 CALIBER
Description :
This is a Flintlock Pistol dating to the first half of the Eighteenth Century. It is a .62 caliber flintlock with a tapered 13 1/4" barrel. There is a flat sight rib on the top of the barrel and two flat side panels at the breech. The pistol is brass mounted. The lock is marked "I.I. BER". I believe this is an attempt to capitalize on the name of one of the top gunmakers of this time, Johann Jacob Behr. His work was signed "I.I. BEHR". Behr was a master gunmaker. His work is of the highest quality. This pistol is well made but not of the same quality, nor as ornate as the master's work. It is in fine condition with the barrel and lock having a gray steel patina. There is some brown speckling and some light pitting of the metal. The brass furniture has a nice golden brass patina. The thumb piece and side plate are tastefully engraved. The butt cap is fairly plain. The lock works well with a very stiff main spring. The front lock screw is stripped and will fall out when the gun is cocked. There is some pitting in the bore, but it is mostly smooth. The stock is in very good condition. There is a short crack running from the sideplate to the barrel. There is a chip at the forward barrel pin on the right side. There are also some hairline cracks in this area along the barrel channel. I believe the front barrel pin is an old replacement. This is a great-looking early flintlock pistol. Stock no. 29716
