EXCELLENT SPRINGFIELD U.S. MODEL 1888 TRAPDOOR RIFLE, .45-70
Description :
This is an original, U.S. Model 1888 Trapdoor Rifle manufactured at Springfield Armory in 1891. It is chambered for the .45-70 Government cartridge. The Model 1888 was the last of the Trapdoor rifles. It also marked the end of the single shot, big bore, black powder arm era in the U.S. Military. The M1888 differed from the earlier trapdoor variations by being fitted with an extendable ramrod type bayonet. Approximately 65,000 were produced between 1889 and 1893. This rifle is in antique excellent condition with more than 95% of its factory blued finish remaining. There is a little finish wear on the barrel in the area around the front sight, the heel of the butt, and a bit of speckling on the trigger plate. The breech block retains most of its cased color with a bit of fading on the firing pin housing. The bore and mechanics are excellent. The stock is excellent as well with a crisp inspector's cartouche dated 1891 on the left wrist. There is a small scratch on the right side of the wrist. This is an outstanding Model 1888 in great condition. Stock no. 29703
