Description :
|
Here is a beautiful Flintlock Pistol dating to the first quarter of the 18th century. At first glance, this appears to be a French pistol, but it is marked on the top of the barrel with "G VON DER FECHT BERLIN". Georg Von Der Fecht was the court rifle maker for Friedrich Wilhelm I of Prussia. He lived from 1675 to 1740. Some of his earliest known guns are wheellocks. This early flintlock has an 11 1/2" octagon to round, tapered barrel of .54 caliber. A flat raised panel runs along the top of the barrel. The lock plate is one piece of brass with an integral pan. The hammer, frizzen, and frizzen screw are blued with about 60% remaining. The barrel is left bright. The barrel has been cleaned and exhibits some fine pitting overall. The brass furniture has a nice golden brass patina. Most parts exhibit finely done engraving. The side plate is engraved and has 11 piercings, a superb bit of inlaying. The butt cap features a grotesque mask. The stock has beautiful, raised relief carving. There is a very old crack running from the ramrod entry thimble up to the top of the lockplate. The tapered ramrod has a brass tip and appears to be the original. The lock works well mechanically. The smooth bore has a little rust and some cleaning scratches but is mostly smooth. This is a superb, early flintlock by a master maker. Stock no. 29713
