Description :
|
This is an original, Contract Model 1819 Hall U.S. Breech-Loading Flintlock Rifle made by Simeon North of Middletown, Connecticut in 1832. Designed by John Hall of Portland, Maine, the Hall Rifle was adopted by the U.S. Military and produced primarily at Harpers Ferry Armory. The Hall was the first breech loading rifle produced in quantity for the military. It was also the first design to feature total interchangeability of parts. In addition to Harper Ferry's production, Simeon Hall was given a contract to produce the Model 1819 and made 5,700 between 1830 and 1836. This is one of North's rifles. It is in very fine original condition with about 90% of its factory lacquer brown finish remaining. There are a few small scrapes in the finish along the top of the barrel from storage. The case-hardened breech retains its black, oil-quenched finish. The barrel band retaining springs have a bit of surface rusting. The mechanics are excellent. The bore would be excellent, bright and shiny, but for some reason there are tool Chatter marks in several places. The rifling on these guns ends about 1 1/2" from the muzzle, supposedly to allow loading the rifle from the muzzle. The tool marks are in the rifling itself. The walnut stock is in fine condition with a few small dings and scratches from use. Tool marks from the shaping of the butt are still visible in the wood. There is an old repair to a chip at the back of the breech. It looks like the wood chipped and the original chip was glued back in place. This is an outstanding example of a nearly 200-year-old rifle. Stock no. 27104
