This is an original, Model 1817 U.S. Flintlock Rifle manufactured by Simeon North of Middletown, Connecticut in 1829. Known as the "Common" rifle, the M1817 featured a 36" round barrel of .54 caliber, a full stock, and sheet iron patchbox. The "Common" designation was to differentiate it from the breech loading Hall rifle of the same period. This rifle is in very good condition in its original flintlock configuration. The gun has a steel gray patina with fine pitting overall. The pitting is a little heavier at the breech around the touch hole. There are some rust spots on the left side along the barrel channel. The sheet iron patchbox has a browner patina. The rifle has excellent mechanics with the lock working perfectly. The bore shows a little pitting, but the rifling is strong along the barrel's length. The stock is in fine condition with a few small dings from use and a tape mark just ahead of the patchbox. The inspector's cartouche remains visible on the left flat of the stock. This is a nice untouched Common Rifle. Stock no. 29608
