Description :
|
This is a Virginia Manufactory 2nd Model Musket manufactured at the Richmond Arsenal. This is an early 2nd Model made in 1813, retaining some features of the 1st Model. These include the integral forged flashpan, pointed finials on the trigger guard, and band springs located behind the bands. This musket has the scarce 39" barrel length. About 14,000 of these were built between 1812 and 1815. This musket is in fine condition with an overall smooth dark brown patina. There is some fine pitting around the flashpan. The butt plate has a rougher texture. The lock works correctly. The bore is very dark with some pitting. The stock is in fine condition with a scattering of small dings and scratches from use. There are some old chips at the back of the lock mortise. There is a chip along the left side of the barrel tang. Most of these muskets were converted to percussion for use in the Civil War. This one appears to be original flint. Stock no. 29332
