Description :
|
This is a 1st Generation Colt "Frontier Six Shooter" Single Action Army Revolver manufactured in 1901 and chambered for the .44-40 (.44 WCF) cartridge. This revolver is nickel plated with a 4 3/4" barrel. It is fitted with a superb set of grips carved with a steer's head on the right grip panel. The steer has inset ruby eyes. Colt designated their single actions chambered in .44-40 as Frontier Six Shooters. I suspect this was done because the lever action rifles of the time could be chambered for the same cartridge. This revolver is in very good to fine condition with about 30% of its factory nickel finish remaining. Most of the remaining finish is on the top and front end of the frame and on the ejector rod housing. The barrel and cylinder have no finish remaining with a steel/brown patina. The grip straps have a smooth dark brown patina. The gun has excellent mechanics. The bore and chambers are very good, a little dark, but with strong rifling along the bore's length. The grips are in fine condition. Made from an animal material, they have developed a beautiful yellow/orange patina. There is a small chip at the heel of the right grip at the frame and an even tinier one about 1 1/2" above that one. The steer head has inset ruby eyes (almost certainly glass). I do not know if these are factory grips, but the steer head is in the right position for a factory grip. Regardless, I am reasonably sure they are of the period. This is a great-looking old Colt just begging for a factory letter. Stock no. 29303
