Item No.: 10051 Price : SOLD
Item : ORIGINAL CIVIL WAR U.S. MODEL 1860 SPENCER CAVALRY CARBINE
Description :
This is an original, Civil War, Model 1860 Spencer Cavalry Carbine. The Spencer was a breech loading, lever action, repeating design fed from a tubular magazine in the butt. It was .52 caliber, firing the .56-.56 Spencer rimfire cartridge. The cartridge designation referred to the case diameter at the throat and base, being a straight walled case. The Spencer was adopted after a private demonstration given to President Lincoln, who heartily endorsed the new design. The Spencer Carbine would go on to become the main cavalry arm of the United States, serving well into the Indian War period with great effect. The Rebs who faced them spoke of the "Damn Yankee rifle you could load in the morning and shoot all day!". This Spencer is in very good condition. Somewhere along the line it was arsenal refurbished and reblued. It retains about 60% of this blued finish with wear on the edges of the frame and on the barrel. Some areas of the barrel are turning brown. The gun works very well mechanically. The bore is mostly very good, but there is some pitting towards the muzzle. The remainder is bright and shiny. The stock is very good with the usual small dings and scratches associated with use. There are two small areas above the sling bar that appear to have been gouges that were filled. This is a good-looking Spencer that soldiered on after the Civil War. Stock no. 28105
