Item No.: 10047 Price : $2,495.00
Item : ORIGINAL, U.S. MODEL 1841 MISSISSIPPI RIFLE
Description :
This is an original U.S. Model 1841 Rifle produced by George W. Tryon of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1845. The firm of Tryon produced 5,000 of these rifles from 1845 to 1848. Known as the "Mississippi" rifle by virtue of its service with Jefferson Davis's Mississippi Regiment in the Mexican American War, the Model 1841 soldiered on into the Civil War. It was used by both sides. In addition, settlers bound west on the Oregon Trail could purchase one of these rifles from the government. They are referred to as jaegers or yaugers in contemporary accounts. Originally, the M1841 fired a patched .54 round ball. This rifle has been smooth-bored to .58 caliber as a shotgun was generally more valuable to western settlers. This rifle is in fine condition. The barrel has a smooth dark brown patina, some of which may be the rifle's original browned finish. The lock has a dark brown patina. There is some light pitting around the bolster and vice marks are visible on the sides of the breech. The brass stock furniture has a good bronze patina. The lock works perfectly. The smooth bore is in fine condition with a few light pits. The stock is very good with a few small dings and scratches from use. There are a few small scuffs of paint from storage. The Mississippi Rifle is a great historic arm, with service in two wars and America's Westward expansion.
