Item No.: 10046 Price : SOLD
Item : CIVIL WAR IMPORTED BRITISH PATTERN 1856 ENFIELD RIFLE, .577 CALIBER
Description :
This is an original, Civil War, British Pattern 1856 Enfield Rifle made by Potts & Hunt of London, England. These are sometimes referred to as "Bar on Band" rifles due to the location of the bayonet lug on the front barrel band. Both the North and the South are known to have imported these rifles, but in far fewer numbers than the Pattern 1853. I have seen two of these identified to soldiers in the U.S. 2nd Maryland Regiment, so we know that regiment used them! This gun has been modified for shooting in the NSSA. The front sight blade has been replaced with a taller post and the barrel has been relined. This gun is in very good condition. It has no finish remaining, the whole rifle having been cleaned to bright. There are a few brown speckles overall and there is some pitting at the breech around the bolster. There is a little pitting on the hammer as well. The mechanics are excellent. The bore, having been lined, is excellent, bright, and shiny. The stock is in fine condition with a scattering of small dings and scratches from use. This rifle is ready to go for shooting in the North-South Skirmish Association. Stock no. 28603
