This is an original, Civil War, Remington Model 1863 Percussion Contract Rifle manufactured in 1863. Known as the "Zouave", the Model 1863 Remington is considered to be one of the best made and designed military arms of the Civil War. Approximately 12,501 were produced from 1862-1865, with all delivered in 1865. The Zouave was a handsome weapon, with a .58 caliber, 33" blued barrel and brass stock furniture with a patchbox. This rifle is in very fine to excellent condition. It retains about 95% of its factory blued finish on the barrel with just a couple of tiny spots of finish loss. The lock plate and hammer retain nearly all of their cased colors. The brass stock furniture has a nice golden brass patina. The rifle has excellent mechanics. The bore is excellent as well, bright and shiny. The stock is very fine with a few small dents from use and storage. The original replacement nipple is still in the parchbox. This is an outstanding example of the Remington Zouave. Stock no. 27603
