Description :
|
This is an original, Model 1866 U.S. Breech-Loading Rifle manufactured in 1866 at Springfield Armory and chambered for the .50-70 Government cartridge. Also known as the Second Model Allin "Trapdoor" conversion, these rifles were designed by Erskine S. Allin at Springfield Armory. Following the Civil War, the US military saw the need for a breech loading cartridge arm. Allin designed a rifle that could be converted from existing stocks of Model 1863 percussion muskets. The first Model Allin used the original M1863 barrels and was chambered for a .58 caliber rimfire cartridge. The Second Model Allin was rebarreled and chambered for the .50-70 cartridge. It was the first centerfire Trapdoor. About 25,000 were produced. The Trapdoor design would last into the 1880's. This rifle is in very fine condition. The armory bright barrel and stock furniture remains brilliant. There are a few small brown specks on the butt plate, the lock, hammer, and breech block retain much of their cased color. About 40% remains with the remainder having developed a dark brown and gray patina. The gun has excellent mechanics and an excellent brilliant bore. The stock is very fine with a few tiny dings from use. There is a clear inspector's cartouche on the left flat of the stock. This is an outstanding example of a 2nd Model Allin in outstanding condition. Stock no. 27143
