SPRINGFIELD U.S. MODEL 1884 TRAPDOOR CAVALRY CARBINE, .45-70
Description :
This is a U.S. Model 1884 Trapdoor Cavalry Carbine manufactured at Springfield Armory in 1889. It is chambered for the .45-70 Government cartridge. Springfield produced about 20,000 of these between 1886 and 1891. This was the standard cavalry arm of the Indian Wars. This carbine is in fine condition, but the cavalry rear sight has been replaced with a rifle sight. The gun retains about 60% of its factory blued finish. The barrel band has no finish remaining and the trigger guard has a steel and brown patina. The lock, hammer, and barrel have most of their blue remaining. The breech block appears to be blued. The gun has excxellent mechanics. The bore is good, with some light pitting, but with visible rifling along its length. The stock is in fine condition with a few small dings and scratches from use. The cartouche is faint but I think I can make out "1889". This is a nice old veteran of the American West. Stock no. 28865
