Item No.: 9955 Price : SOLD
Item : VERY FINE EDDYSTONE US MODEL 1917 RIFLE, .30-06
Description :
Here is an original US Model 1917 Rifle manufactured by Eddystone in April of 1918. The U.S. Model 1917 was based on the British P-14 Rifle being produced under contract by Winchester, Remington, and Eddystone. The British contracts ended just as America entered WWI. Rather than retool to make the Model 1903, it was decided to alter the P-14 to accept the U.S. .30-06 Government cartridge and the M1917 Rifle was born. Over 2.5 million were produced before the war's end. The M1917 actually saw more service in the war than the '03 Springfield. Alvin York won his Congressional Medal of Honor with a Model 1917 Rifle. This rifle is in very fine condition with about 95% of its WWI blued finish remaining. There is some light finish wear on the high points, on the bolt handle knob, and on the butt plate. I believe that this rifle may have been rebuilt during WWI. It still has a blued finish. The barrel is a Rock Island Arsenal replacement, nicely marked but undated. The bolt is of Remington manufacture. The bore and mechanics are excellent. The stock is excellent as well. Included is an original, US Model 1907 leather sling made by Boyt and dated 1944. It is in very good condition, a little dry with some surface cracking and flaking of the surface leather. This is one good looking Model 1917 Rifle. Stock no. 28608
