BRITISH VICTORIAN ERA RIFLE REGIMENT OFFICER'S SHAKO
Description :
This is an original British Officer's Shako of the Victorian Era. It is from a Rifle Regiment, but I have not been able to identify the plate. The shako is complete and in very fine to excellent condition. It is constructed of black felt with leather reinforcement. There is decorative ribbon around the top of the crown and the edge of the bill. The bill is tarred leather. The chin strap is chain mail with leather backing. The chin strap is supported by floral rosettes. There are smaller decorative rosettes on each side above the chin strap mounts. There is a lion's head rosette with a hook to support the chin strap at the back of the shako. The liner is complete with a leather sweat band and red silk lining. There are some spots of tar staining on the silk, but the maker's markings are still visible. The shako was made by Landon & Morland of London. There is one small hole in the silk. The shako plate is a Maltese Cross topped with the Queen's Crown. The center device is a Laurel Wreath surrounding what looks like "VR" in fancy script. It appears to be tarnished silver. The shako retains its original plume of black Raven feathers. This is an outstanding example of a Victorian Officer's Shako. Stock no. 28385
