Item No.: 9904 Price : SOLD
Item : VERY FINE SPRINGFIELD U.S. MODEL 1884 TRAPDOOR RIFLE, .45-70
Description :
This is an original, U.S. Model 1884 Trapdoor Rifle manufactured at Springfield Armory in 1889. It is chambered for the .45-70 Government cartridge. The Model 1884 was the last of the Trapdoor rifles to use a socket bayonet. The M1884 differed from the earlier trapdoor variations by being fitted with the Buffington rear sight. Approximately 200,000 rifles were produced between 1886 and 1891. This rifle is in very fine to excellent condition. More than 95% of its factory blued finish remains. There is some finish wear at the muzzle from the friction of having the bayonet fixed. There is some speckling of the heel and toe of the butt plate, and some light wear on the barrel bands. The breech block retains nearly all of its case colors. The rifle has excellent mechanics and a brilliant, excellent bore. The stock is in very fine condition with just a tiny ding or two from use. There is a strong inspector's cartouche dated 1889. In addition, this rifle has been fitted with the marksman's pistol grip adopted in 1880. Made of iron and checkered, this was fastened to the wrist with a single screw through the trigger plate. It was intended for target shooting. This grip appears to be an original. It has developed a brown patina from handling, with about 30% of its factory blued finish remaining. It is amazing how much better the rifle feels with this grip. This is a superb Trapdoor in great condition. Stock no. 28284
