|
Description :
|
This is an original, U.S. Springfield Model 1896 Krag-Jorgensen Rifle manufactured in 1896 or 1897 and chambered for the .30-40 Government cartridge. Approximately 62,000 were made between 1896 and 1898. The M1896 Krag had the cleaning rod moved to the butt cavity and had a longer hand guard. The Krag was the first U.S. Rifle to fire smokeless ammunition. This rifle is in fine condition with 80-90% of its factory blued finish remaining. The trigger guard shows some finish wear. The magazine cover and side plate show mottling of their blued finish. The oil quenched receiver shows most of its black finish. The extractor retains its fire blued finish. The bolt handle, originally bright, has a smooth light brown patina. The butt plate has turned brown. The rifle has excellent mechanics and a very fine bore. The stock is very fine as well, with a "P" firing proof. There is no inspector's cartouche. This is a nice, early, antique Krag. Stock no. 28282
