SPRINGFIELD U.S. MODEL 1884 TRAPDOOR RIFLE, .45-70
Description :
This is an original, U.S. Model 1884 Trapdoor Rifle manufactured at Springfield Armory in 1889. It is chambered for the .45-70 Government cartridge. The Model 1884 was the last of the Trapdoor rifles to use a socket bayonet. The M1884 differed from the earlier trapdoor variations by being fitted with the Buffington rear sight. Approximately 200,000 rifles were produced between 1886 and 1891. This rifle is in fine condition. About 90% of its factory blued finish remains. There is a little finish loss and browning near the muzzle. The heel and toe of the butt plate show a little finish wear. The case colors of the breech block are fading to a brown gray. The speckling on the lock is hardened grease. The rifle has excellent mechanics and a very good bore. The stock is in very good condition with a scattering of small dings and scratches from use. There is a strong inspector's cartouche dated 1898 on the left side of the wrist. This is a decent Trapdoor that should make a good shooter. Stock no. 28263
