This is an original, U.S. Springfield Model 1898 Krag-Jorgensen Rifle manufactured in 1901 and chambered for the .30-40 Government cartridge. Approximately 330,000 were made between 1898 and 1903. The M1898 Krag had the shortest service life of any U.S. arm, replaced by the M1903 Rifle just 5 years after production began. The Krag was the first U.S. Rifle to fire smokeless ammunition. This rifle is in very good to fine condition. It retains about 70% of its factory blued finish with overall finish wear typical of use in the field. The trigger guard and butt plate have turned a light brown. The oil quenched receiver has turned a mottled gray with some brown spotting on the bolt and magazine cover. The rifle has an excellent bore and mechanics. The stock is in very good to fine condition, as well, with a scattering of light dings and scratches from use. There is a crisp inspector's cartouche on the left side of the wrist and a "P" proof behind the trigger guard. This is a nice untouched Krag that has seen a little service. Stock no. 28143
