This is an original, Civil War, U.S. Model 1861 Rifle Musket of .58 caliber. This is a contract arm manufactured by the Savage Revolving Fire Arms Co. of Middletown, Connecticut in 1863. The Model 1861 eliminated the Maynard tape primer of the earlier Model 1855 Rifle musket and was the standard U.S. Musket of the Civil War. Though Springfield production ended in 1862, production by contractors continued right through the end of the war. It served from the opening shots to the surrender at Appomattox. This musket is in fine condition. It remains mostly armory bright with some very fine pitting on some areas of the barrel. I suspect it has been lightly cleaned. The butt plate is mostly a smooth light brown. The rear sight remains blued. The musket has an excellent bore and mechanics. The stock is very good with a scattering of small dings and scratches from use. I think this musket would make a great shooter. Stock no. 27158
