CIVIL WAR SHARPS NEW MODEL 1863 MILITARY RIFLE, .52 CALIBER
Description :
This is an original, Sharps New Model 1863 Military Breechloading Percussion Rifle. Sharps produced approximately 6,150 of this type rifle during the war. The military rifles had 30" barrels with full length forearms secured by three barrel bands. All had iron patch boxes and were .52 caliber. The majority of the Model 1863 Rifles used a triangular socket bayonet. This rifle is a military contract gun with inspector's cartouches on the stock and sub-inspector's initials in a number of places. It is in fine condition. The barrel retains about 70% of its factory blued finish. The barrel bands have turned gray. The receiver group and lever have no case color remaining. They have turned gray with an oversprinkling of brown patina. The patchbox and butt plate have some blued finish remaining with some light surface rusting. The gun has excellent mechanics and a very fine to excellent bore. The stock is in fine condition with a scattering of small dings and scratches from use. There are two visible cartouches on the left side of the wrist. This is a very nice example of the Sharps Military Rifle. Stock no. 27456
