VERY FINE, SPRINGFIELD U.S. MODEL 1880 HUNTING KNIFE AND SCABBARD

Description :
|
This is an original, U.S. Model 1880 Hunting Knife manufactured at Springfield Armory. These knives were designed as a multi-purpose tool for the soldiers. It could serve not only as a knife, but perform a number of other light camp duties as well. The knife has an 8 1/2" blade, finished bright with a center reinforcing rib. The 4" hilt is turned maple that is ribbed for a more secure grip. It connects to the blade with a brass guard that is riveted in place. The guard is marked on the left side with "US"/"SPRINGFIELD". The right side is stamped with the serial number "1521". The knife was issued in a leather scabbard made at either Rock Island Arsenal or Watervliet Arsenal. Originally made with a leather belt loop, the scabbards were later modified with a brass hook for the soldier's belt. This knife is in very fine condition. The blade remains 98% factory bright with just a few specks of oxidation at the guard. The blade has been very lightly sharpened. The grip is in very fine condition with no chips or cracks. The brass guard has a nice dark bronze patina. The scabbard is in fine condition with tight stitching. There are a few tiny flakes of the surface finish and a small shallow cut on the front edge. The scabbard has been retro-fitted with a brass hook belt attachment marked "R I A". There is some creasing and flaking of the leather at the point where the brass hook joins the scabbard. This area was subject to a great deal of twisting and flexing when the knife was worn. This is an outstanding example of the M1880 Hunting Knife. Stock no. 27775
