Item :	FINE ENGLISH DURS EGG BRONZE BARRELED FLINTLOCK PISTOL, CA. 1796, JERSEY ISLE SERVICE

This is a Bronze Barreled Flintlock Pistol made by the famed English Gunmaker Durs Egg. Durs Egg was born in Switzerland, but moved to England where he rose to fame as one of the preeminent gun builders of his time. His company was known for the production of the Ferguson rifle. Working in the late flintlock era, his locks came to represent the pinnacle of flintlock design. This pistol is one of the 200 pairs built by both Durs Egg and Henry Nock in 1796. They were built as a result of an Ordnance request by Philippe d'Auvergne, Captain, Royal Navy. Captain d'Auvergne was a spymaster operating in the Jersey Islands. He had been allotted 100,000 British Pounds to disburse among the network of citizens that he handled from his home on Jersey Isle. These pistols were contracted from that allottment. This pistol exhibits a storekeeper's mark, barrel proofs, and a Crown/8 marking near the trigger guard tang, all of which mark it as an Ordnance pistol. It is in very fine condition. The lock, marked "D. EGG" behind the hammer and with a "Crown/GR" before the hammer, has a pewter/steel patina. The bronze barrel is 7" long with a .60 caliber bore. The barrel and stock furniture have a nice golden bronze patina. The stock is in fine condition with just a few small dings from use. This is a great little pistol with a truly interesting pedigree.
