BRITISH MILITARY PATTERN 1853 TYPE II RIFLE MUSKET
Description :
This is an original, British Military Pattern 1853 Type II Rifle Musket assembled in 1856 at the Tower of London. The lock is clearly marked with a Crown/VR behind the hammer and 1856/TOWER before the hammer. The “Type II” Enfield rifle muskets were produced from 1855-1858. The Type II musket incorporated a number of improvements over the first type. They had a stronger "beefier" hammer. The barrel bands were solid and retained by band springs rather than clamping type encountered on all other variations of the P-1853. In addition, the upper band is much wider than those on any other Enfield. This variation also changed the button head rammer to a slotted, jag-head rammer. Early production Type II guns saw service in the Crimean War, but this one might be a bit too late. A small number have been found with Confederate import marks, so at least a few were imported. This musket is in fine condition with an overall smooth dark brown patina. It has excellent mechanics and a fine bore. The bore has a few pits, but the rifling is strong along the barrel's length. The stock is in fine condition with a few dings and scratches from use. There is a crisp re-inspection cartouche marked "Pimlico" over "1863" on the right side of the butt. The P-1853 Type II is a scarce gun, much harder to find than a Type III or even a Type I. This is a nice example. Stock no. 27570
