VERY FINE, ANTIQUE U.S. MODEL 1894 KRAG-JORGENSEN RIFLE, .30-40 GOVT.

This is an original, U.S. Model 1894 Krag-Jorgensen Rifle, probably manufactured in 1894 or early 1895 at Springfield Armory. It has a very low serial number. It has been armory upgraded to the standards of 1896. Approximately 24,562 were made between 1894 and 1896. Most were upgraded to Model 1896 standards. The M1898 Krag had the the shortest service life of any U.S. arm, replaced by the M1903 Rifle just 9 years after production began. The Krag was the first U.S. Rifle to fire smokeless ammunition. This rifle is in very fine condition. It retains about 70% of its original factory blued finish. There is some finish wear on the magazine cover and most of the finish is gone on the butt plate. The black oil quenched receiver has lightened in color. The rifle has an excellent bore and mechanics. The stock is very fine, but there is no visible cartouche. Early Model 1894 Krags are quite scarce. This is a nice example. Stock no. xxx
