Item No.: 9781 Price : SOLD
Description :
Here is an original Peabody Breech Loading Rifle manufactured by the Providence Tool Company of Providence, Rhode Island in the early 1870's. It is chambered for the .43 Spanish cartridge. This is an outside hammer military style Peabody Rifle. The round 33" barrel is stocked to the muzzle and fitted with barrel bands. The Peabody action was designed by Henry O. Peabody of Boston, Massachusetts in 1862. It had not been perfected in time to serve in the Civil War. Most of the Peabody production was for foreign contracts and sporting rifles. Only about 112,000 of all types were produced from 1866-1871. This rifle is in very fine condition with about 90% of its factory blued finish remaining. The nose cap has been cleaned to a bright finish. The top barrel band has a gray finish. The butt plate is armory bright and has a few speckles of dark brown patina. The receiver retains nearly 100% of its case colors. The lever has about 90% of its color and the hammer and lock plate about 60% color. The gun has excellent mechanics. The bore is excellent as well, bright and shiny with strong rifling. The walnut military style stock is in fine condition with just a few small dings from use. This is a scarce and desirable rifle in beautiful condition. Stock no. 27120
