Item No.: 9763 Price : SOLD
Item : BRITISH WILKINSON EXPERIMENTAL UNDERHAMMER MILITARY TRIALS MUSKET, CA. 1839
Description :
This is an experimental percussion musket made by Wilkinson and patented in 1839. The musket was submitted for trial and was given a 1,000 round test in 1840. It was not adopted. An identical musket is pictured on p.175, pl. 53, of Blackmore's "British Military Firearms". This musket is a an underhammer design. It is magnificent in its simplicity. The hammer is its own spring and the trigger is the sear with half and full cock notches. The barrel is 39" long with smooth bore of .75 caliber. It has a rear sight, bayonet stud and Hanoverian catch. The barrel is marked "WILKINSONS PATENT" under the hammer spring. It also has double-struck Broad Arrows (indicating sale from Crown Stores), London view marks, and proof marks. The view stamp is partially overstruck with the number "5". The gun is in very fine condition with a brown patina and even light pitting on the barrel. The brass furniture has a nice golden bronze patina. The mechanics are in perfect working order. The bore is excellent, bright, and shiny. The stock is in excellent condition, untouched with just a tiny ding or two from storage. The right side of the butt is stamped "I.C.R.". This is a rare trial musket of the early percussion era. Stock no. 22430
