NEW YORK STATE CONTRACT REMINGTON ROLLING BLOCK CARBINE, .50-70
Description :
This is an original Remington Rolling Block Cavalry Carbine manufactured in 1872 for the New York State National Guard and chambered for the .50-70 Government cartridge. New York State contract rolling blocks have several features that set them apart from others. They have a very tall hammer spur, the thumb lever for the breech block extends out to the right rather than upward, and they have a safety feature that returns the hammer to the half-cock position when the breech is opened. I have always thought that the NY contract guns were the best variant of the Remington Rolling Blocks. The cavalry carbine has a 22" barrel and has a ring bar and sling ring on the left side of the gun. This carbine is in fine condition. It has been refinished, probably arsenal reblued, and retains more than 95% of this finish. There are some areas of old pitting on the barrel under the blue. There is some finish wear on the barrel band. The gun has excellent mechanics and a very fine bore with strong rifling along its length. The stock is in fine condition with a few small dings from use. There is a crisp inspector's cartouche on the left side of the wrist with the initials "H.B.H.". This should be a good shooting carbine. Stock no. 27305
