IDENTIFIED FIRST MARYLAND CAVALRY.52 CALIBER PERCUSSION SHARPS M1863 CAVALRY CARBINE

Sharps Percussion Breech Loading US Martial Long Arm. SN# C39864, Carbine is complete and in good overall condition. The metal is a steel gray and evenly tarnished. Clear markings. Fine bore and excellent mechanics. Fine oil finished stock and fore end with just some minor wear on the left butt. I can just make out the ends of the top cartouche on the left flat. This carbine was issued to a Private in the First Maryland (US) Cavalry. It is noted by number and name to one John Morehead of Baltimore whose service record is up and down, AWOL-Captured-AWOL-Exchanged-AWOL-Transferred as teamster-Vet Surgeon-Teamster. A copy of Private Moreheads service record is included on a computer disc. The issue of this carbine to Pvt. Morehead is documented in the Regimental and Company books held in the National Archives record group 94 in the "A" Company Order Book. Carbine has a letter of authenticity from noted Author Charles W. Pate. Nice to have a Civil War gun with background.
