IDENTIFIED CONFEDERATE "D" GUARD BOWIE KNIFE

17 1/4 Inches overall with an up-swept 12 1/2 inch blade. Blade is obviously hand forged and had a rudimentry quill back. Severe clipped point. Iron hand guard with pointed quillion. Walnut one piece grip carved "Will Benton" in 3/8 inch letters on the left side and "62nd Regt VMI." on the right. This is not The Virginia Military Institute! The 62nd Virginia Infantry Regiment was heavily engaged throughout the Civil War and because of active enlistments was able to parent an Artillery Battalion "McClanahans" and a Partisan Ranger Battalion, "First Virginia Partisan Range Battalion" , during the conflict. Will Benton was a soldier in Company "D" and he enlister 11/01/1863. This knife comes with a well researched and put together history of the 62nd.
