Description :
|
New Jersey Surcharged. .69 Caliber Rifled Maynard Locked Percussion Musket. In the mid-1850's The United States Military became infatuated with the Maynard Tape Primer System and put it on all kinds of firearms. This arm started life as a US Model 1816/22 Flintlock musket and was converted at Frankford Arsenal by the patent breech method, Rifled and re-locked with a Remington supplied Maynard Tape Primer Lock. Most of these were equipped with a long range rear sight, but several thousand made up for New Jersey didn't have the sights applied. This is a very fine example, completely original with fine smooth metal surfaces, crisp markings and "1858" dates on tang and lock. Excellent bore and perfect, strong mechanics. Original sling swives and altered M1816 ram rod with cupping for the Minie Elongated bullet. Excellent stock with sharp cartouche at left flat. This is a New Jersey purchased weapon of 1858. As an interesting side note the most famous photo of a ConfederateSoldier under arms is a full length photo of Sgt. Thomas Taylor, 8th Louisiana Infantry taken in 1861 or 1862. Fine Rifled Musket! 25262
