Item No.: 9560 Price : $3,500.00
Description :
1814 Dated Lock. Rifle has been converted to percussion with a drum bolster and "mule ear" flat 1840's hammer. 36 Inch octagon to round barrel has been "freshed out" to about .64 caliber. It is still thinly rifled. Clear Government proofs at left breech. Rear sight is correct form but may be a restoration. Barrel is a smooth plum brown patina. Lock has sharp "Harpers/Ferry/1814" marks. The Eagle in the center has been obscured. The true wear on the rifle is around the bolster/breech. The bore is well used. Mechanics are adequate. The brass patchbox, side plate and trigger guard have a fine antique patina. The escutcheons for the stock key and brass stock band are restorations. The stock is a solid original walnut with cartouches at the left flat. There is an ancient chip missing at the top of the lock mortise. I believe the ram rod to be a modern replacement. Although this rifle has seen some restoration it still has a story to tell, especially with the Federal Eagle deliberately obscured and new bore diameter. This rifle easily could have seen service in the early stages of the War Between the States. 25586
