Item No.: 9482 Price : SOLD
Item : VERY FINE NEW MODEL SHARPS MODEL 1863 CARBINE W/ PATCHBOX
Description :
This is an original, Civil War Sharps New Model 1863 Cavalry Carbine. It is a .52 caliber breech loading single shot carbine firing a nitrated paper cartridge. Approximately 20,000 New Model 1863 carbines were produced with the patchbox and another 40,000 without. The Sharps was the most widely issued Cavalry Carbine of the war. this carbine is in very fine original condition. The barrel retains about 80% of its factory blued finish with some thinning of the blue in the area around the rear sight. There are some very light freckles of brown just beginning to form and a little fine pitting in this area. The gun has about 90% of its case colors remaining on the receiver and patchbox. The colors have faded to gray on the hammer and the color is worn from the bottom of the lever. The butt plate has a pewter patina with a heavier speckling of brown. Many of the screws and small parts retain a fire blued finish. The sling ring bar and ring retain their correct bright finish. The bore and mechanics are excellent. The stock is in very fine to excellent condition as well. There is a faint inspector's cartouche on the left wrist of the stock. The Sharps carbine fought hard throughout the Civil War. This is an outsatanding example. Stock no. 25229
