Item No.: 9481 Price : SOLD
Item : REMINGTON MAYNARD PERCUSSION CONVERSION OF U.S. MODEL 1816 FLINTLOCK
Description :
This is a Remington Maynard percussion conversion of a U.S. Model 1816 Flintlock Musket done at Frankford Arsenal in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1857. The United States Government contracted with the Remington Arms Co. to produce 20,000 locks and percussion bolsters to be used in the conversion of flintlock muskets. The Maynard tape primer system had been adopted in 1855 for the new .58 caliber Rifle-Musket. It allowed, in theory, a new cap to be advanced to the percussion cone each time the musket was cocked, eliminating the need to manually cap the weapon for each shot. In practice it did not work well, and was eliminated on the later Model 1861 Rifle-Musket. The 20,000 locks and bolsters produced by Remington were all shipped to Frankford Arsenal and used on various make M1816 muskets. The muskets were also rifled and fitted with long range rear sights. These conversions were done between 1855 and 1859. Most, if not all of these muskets saw service in the Civil War. It is known that the U.S. Navy received 600 in 1857 and in the same year a number were sent to 6th U.S. Infantry at Fort Riley, Kansas. A large number went to New York and New Jersey regiments. This musket is in very good condition. It is complete and untouched. The gun has an overall pewter patina with a speckling of brown. There is some pitting around the bolster area, on the lock, hammer, and the door of the Maynard device. The rear sight retains about 50% of its original blued finish. The mechanics work very well, including the mechanism of the Maynard primer. The bore is pretty bad. It is dark and heavily pitted, but remnants of the rifling are visible. The stock is in very good condition with the usual scattering of small dings and scratches from use. This is a nice untouched example of the Remington maynard Conversion Musket, a type that served well throughout the Civil War. Stock no. 25377
