HARPERS FERRY TYPE III U.S. MODEL 1816 FLINTLOCK MUSKET, .69 CALIBER

This is an original, Type III U.S. Model 1816 Flintlock Musket manufactured at Harpers Ferry in 1840. Harpers Ferry made over 350,000 of these muskets between 1816 and 1844. The Type III was produced from 1831 to the end of production. This musket is in antique fine condition. The metal, originally finished armory bright, has developed a pewter/steel patina with a light speckling of brown. There is heavier patina on the butt plate. The original flint lock works well. Surprisingly, the bore is in fine condition. There are a few tiny pits, but for the most part it is smooth and shiny. The stock is in very good to fine condition. It is quite dark and has a number of small nicks, dings, and scratches from use. There is a small chip along the left side of the barrel tang. The left flat has inspector's initials. The name "T Hardee" or "I Hardee" is carved into the left side of the butt. Most of the Type III Model 1816 Flintlocks were converted to percussion and served during the Civil War. An original Flintlock example is a scarce gun. Stock no. 25237
