Item No.: 9471 Price : SOLD
Item : "FLAT LOCK" WATERS U.S. MODEL 1836 PISTOL
Description :
This is an original, Model 1836 Percussion Pistol made by A.H. Waters & Co. of Milbury, Massachusetts. This is known as a "Flat-Lock" Waters. There is some conjecture about this variant of the Model 1836 pistol. The Model 1836 was the last U.S. martial handgun to use the flintlock system of ignition. Waters made 23,000 of them between 1836 and 1844. These were all flintlocks, with the locks having beveled lock plates. The military adopted a percussion pistol in 1842. Many of the existing flintlocks were converted to percussion beginning in the late 1840's. It is believed that Waters built these pistols about the time of the conversions using the design of the Model 1836 and a newly designed percussion lock with no bevels. Most think these "flat-lock" pistols were purpose built as percussion arms. They are marked with the maker's name only and no dates. This is one of those pistols. It is in very fine condition. It remains armory bright with just a few specks of brown patina. The lock works very well. The bore has some light pitting and a few scratches but remains mostly smooth. The stock is in fine condition. There are no inspector's cartouches. This is a scarce and interesting American arm. Stock no. 25213
