SPRINGFIELD U.S. MODEL 1842 MUSKET, NEW JERSEY MARKED
Description :
Here is an original, U.S. Model 1842 Musket manufactured at Springfield Armory in 1849. It is a percussion, .69 caliber smooth-bore arm. The M1842 has the distinction of being the first U.S. Percussion musket design adopted by the United States. It was also the last smooth-bore musket design manufactured. Though replaced by the M1855 Rifle-Musket, they continued to be issued and were used throughout the Civil War. Springfield Armory produced about 172,000 of this type. This musket is in antique fine condition. Originally finished armory bright, the gun has developed an overall light scattering of brown patina spots over a mostly steel patina. The gun has excellent mechanics. The bore is very fine. It has darkened just a bit, but remains nice and smooth. The stock is in fine condition with a few small dings and scratches from use. There are two small crosses carved into the right side of the butt. The original inspector's cartouche is very faint. The gun has New Jersey surcharges on the left side. There is one on the barrel and one on the stock above the side plate. This indicates usage by New Jersey regiments during the war. The number or date "1851" is stamped on the tang and I am not sure what this represents. I have always liked the Model 1842 musket. They saw a lot of service in two American wars and this is a very nice example. Stock no. 25376
