Item No.: 9464 Price : $3,150.00
Item : VERY FINE, U.S. MODEL 1836 FLINTLOCK PISTOL BY ASA WATERS, .54 CALIBER
Description :
Here is an original, U.S. Model 1836 Flintlock Pistol manufactured by Asa Waters of Milbury, Massachusetts in 1837. The Model 1836 was the last U.S. martial handgun to use the flintlock system of ignition. It is a .54 caliber smooth bore with an 8 1/2" barrel. They were made by two contractors, Asa Waters of Milbury, Massachusetts and Robert Johnson of Middletown, Connecticut. Waters made 23,000 between 1836 and 1844. This pistol is from the from the initial production of 20,000. The remaining 3000 pistols were all made in 1844. The Model 1836 was the standard handgun of the Mexican War. Converted to percussion, it would serve on into the Civil War. This pistol is in very fine condition. It remains in its original flintlock configuration. The iron parts of the gun have developed a pewter steel patina with just a few tiny specks of brown. The case colors of the lock have darkened to a dark gray. The area over the markings has been lightly cleaned to make the lettering more visible. The frizzen spring and trigger retain most of their blued finish. The gun has excellent mechanics. The .54 caliber bore shows some light pitting, but is mostly smooth. The stock is in very fine condition with two crisp inspector's cartouches on the left flat. The Model 1836 is considered to be the best of the U.S. Flintlock handguns. An untouched, original flintlock example in nice condition is a very hard gun to find. Stock no. 25211
