Item :	U.S. MARTIALLY MARKED COLT MODEL 1851 NAVY REVOLVER, "ARMY-NAVY"

This is an original Colt Model 1851 Navy .36 Caliber Percussion Revolver manufactured in 1856. Earning its name from the Naval battle scene engraved on the cylinder, the '51 Navy was Colt's primary medium caliber revolver in the percussion era. Produced from 1850 until 1873, it was enormously popular and saw extensive use during the American Civil War by combatants on both sides. Thousands were carried into the Great American West both before and after the war. They traveled to the Gold Fields, along the Oregon Trail, and into every cow town in the West. Wild Bill Hickock favored the '51 Navy and carried a pair, butt forward, drawing the charges and reloading them each morning. This is a U.S. Martial Navy with military acceptance markings. There are Inspector's cartouches visible on the grips. The revolver is in very good condition. It is all matching, including the wedge and the mechanics work very well. Unfortunately there is absolutely no finish remaining on the gun. It has an overall pewter gray patina. The brass trigger guard and back strap have golden brass patina. The barrel markings are clear and the cylinder scene is fairly strong. The U.S. and Colt's Patent markings have been scrubbed from the frame. The bore and chambers are dark and rusty. The grips are in very good condition with some wear from use. The inspector's cartouche on the left grip is quite faint. The one on the right is much stronger. Actual military Colt Navies are quite scarce. This one has "seen the Elephant" condition-wise, but is complete and functional. Stock no. 25328
