FRENCH MODEL 1822 PERCUSSION CONVERSION PISTOL
Description :
This is an original, French Model 1822 Cavalry Pistol. Originally a flintlock, the pistol was arsenal converted to the percussion system of ignition. It is a heavy, .70 caliber single shot rifled pistol with a lanyard loop on the brass pommel. It is marked on the barrel tang with "Mdl. 1822 bis". It is a cone in barrel type conversion. The arsenal that built the gun is marked on the lock plate, but it is no longer legible. The pistol is in very good condition. The barrel and lock have a steel color with a heavy sprinkling of dark brown patina from old surface rusting. The lock and mechanics function well, but there is no half-cock position. The bore has some pitting, but the shallow rifling remains visible. The stock is in fine condition with several numbers stamped in various places. The most prominent is the numnber "4000" stamped over the "Mutzig". Mutzig is a ommune of France located at the entrance of the Bruche river valley, in the Bas-Rhin department in Alsace, in north-eastern France. The pistol retains its original Tulip headed ramrod. This is a big impressive horse pistol that undoubtedly saw a lot of service. Stock no. 25330
