CIVIL WAR 2ND MODEL MAYNARD CAVALRY CARBINE
Description :
This is an original, Civil War 2nd Model Maynard Cavalry Carbine manufactured by the Massachusetts Arms Company of Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. Also known as the Model 1863, the Maynard was a breech loading, percussion arm of .50 caliber. About 20,202 2nd Model Maynard Carbines were produced from 1863-1865. Cavalry units known to have been issued the Maynard were the 9th and 11th Indiana and the 11th Tennessee. This Maynard is in very fine condition. The barrel and hammer retain nearly 100% of their original, factory blued finish. The receiver and lever retain about 50 % of their original case colored finish. The color is most evident on the top and bottom of the frame and on the lever. The color on the sides of the frame and on the lever has faded to a light gray. There are some light abrasion marks visible on the sides. It looks like someone hit them lightly with sand paper. The butt plate is a smooth brown. The gun has excellent mechanics and an excellent brilliant bore. The butt stock is in fine condition with a few small dings and scratches from use. There are two crisp inspector's cartouches on the left side of the wrist. This is an outstanding example of a Civil War Maynard Carbine. Stock no. 25231
