Item No.: 9442 Price : SOLD
Item : CIVIL WAR WHITNEY PERCUSSION NAVY REVOLVER, KNOWN CONFEDERATE RANGE
Description :
This is an original, Civil War Percussion Navy Revolver manufactured by Eli Whitney of New Haven, Connecticut. It is .36 Caliber. The Whitney was very popular during the Civil War with over half of the standard Second Model revolvers being purchased by the Army, Navy, and various states. Just before the war the State of Virginia purchased 600 of these revolvers for distribution to Virginia Cavalry Units. Some of these were eventually given to General Lee and his staff, with the rest going to the cavalry. There is an existing document in the Virginiana Room of the Warrenton, Va. library from a local gunsmith. It is a receipt for the repair of 1 Colt and 24 Whitney Revolvers from May 8 to October 3, 1861. The receipt was dated October 7, 1861. It is made out to the Black Horse Company of Fauquier County (4th Virginia Cavalry). The list gives the serial numbers of the guns repaired and this revolver falls squarely in that range of numbers. This gun is in very good condition. It has an overall smooth brown patina. There are traces of blue in protected areas. The brass trigger guard has some black tarnish. The action works well. The bore and chambers are dark, but the rifling is strong. The grips are in fine condition with about 40% of their varnish remaining. This is a nice untouched example of a Civil War Whitney. There is a strong possibility that it is one of the guns purchased by Virginia. Stock no. 25356
