Item No.: 9439 Price : $2,450.00
Description :
This is an original, U.S. Model 1808 Contract Flintlock Musket manufactured by Steven Jenks and Sons of Providence, Rhode Island. The Model 1808 was developed as a reaction to the looming possibility of war in Europe. In 1808 the U.S. War Dept. was granted authority by Congress to procure 85,200 new muskets and subsequently contracted with 19 gunmakers for their production. Only about half this number were ever produced. Jenks was one of the contractors, agreeing to produce 4,000 muskets. Actual delivery is believed to be 3,925. This particular has the letter "M" stamped on the barrel, indicating that it was sent to the state of Maryland (Massachusetts muskets were generally stamped "MS"). It is in fine condition with an overall smooth brown patina. The lock has traces of pewter steel patina along with the brown. The original flint lock works well. It is marked with the Federal Eagle over a small oval panel with "U.S.". The bore is pretty rough, something to be expected on a musket that is more than 200 years old. It is dark and heavily pitted. The stock is in fine condition except for an old crack on the left side extending from the front side plate screw up to the barrel channel. It was stabilized many years ago with two tiny iron pins. There are some small check cracks running through the rear side plate screw. There is a small gouge above the middle barrel band spring on the right side of the stock. This is a nice, untouched, early American Flintlock Musket with ties to Maryland. Stock no. 25238
