Item :	FINE ORIGINAL REMINGTON U.S. MODEL 1863 ZOUAVE RIFLE, .58 CALIBER

This is an original, Civil War, Remington Model 1863 Percussion Contract Rifle manufactured in 1863. Known as the "Zouave", the Model 1863 Remington is considered to be one of the best made and designed military arms of the Civil War. Approximately 12,501 were produced from 1862-1865, with all delivered in 1865. The Zouave was a handsome weapon, with a .58 caliber, 33" blued barrel and brass stock furniture with a patchbox. This rifle is in very fine condition. The barrel retains about 98% of its factory blued finish. The lock plate, hammer, and barrel tang have about 80% of their case colored finish remaining. On the thin forward portion of the lock plate the colors have faded to a pewter gray. The brass furniture has a beautiful, even bronze patina. The rifle has excellent mechanics and an excellent bore. The stock is in fine condition with a beautiful hand rubbed oil finish. There are a few small dings and scratches from use or storage. There are several small dents at the front of the trigger plate. The rearmost dents extend slightly onto the brass. There is a very old, small chip on the right side of the stock barrel channel, halfway between the the upper and lower bands. The brass patchbox still holds the original replacement nipple and also a musket worm. The nipple is original; the worm is a replica. This is a beautiful musket in great condition.
