SCARCE SPRINGFIELD U.S. MODEL 1870 TRAPDOOR RIFLE, .50-70 CALIBER
Description :
Here is an original, U.S. Model 1870 Trapdoor Rifle manufactured at Springfield Armory. These were produced from 1870-1873 with only 11,533 made. The Model 1870 continued the use of Civil War type locks, but was beginning to resemble the the later Model 1873 rifle. It was shorter than its predecessors with a 32 1/2" barrel on a shortened receiver. This would be standardized on the M1873. This rifle is in fine condition. The bright finished barrel has developed a mottled pewter and brown patina. The receiver, breech and lock are almost black. There is a speckling of dark brown spots on the breech block. The lock and trigger guard retain about 70% of their blued finish. The barrel bands have turned brown. The butt plate has about 50% of its bright finish remaining with the remainder a dark brown. The rifle has excellent mechanics. The bore is very good. There are a few light pits, but for the most part the bore is smooth with strong rifling along its length. The stock is in fine condition with the usual small dings and scratches associated with use. There are three visible inspector's cartouches on the left flat of the stock. This is a scarce variant of the venerable Trapdoor in decent condition. Stock no. 25268
