Item :	VERY FINE CIVIL WAR SMITH CAVALRY CARBINE

Description :

This is an original, Civil War Smith Cavalry Carbine manufactured in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. This one does not have the contract maker's markings, but does have government inspector's markings. The cavalry carbine is fitted with a saddle ring and bar. Over 30,000 Smith Carbines were produced from 1861-1865 with the vast majority going to the U.S. Government. Cavalry units known to have been issued the Smith were the 3rd West Virginia, the 7th and 11th Illinois, the 1st Connecticut, the 7th and 17th Pennsylvania, the 6th and 9th Ohio, and the 1st Massachusetts. The Smith was a breech loading, percussion arm of .50 caliber. This carbine is in very fine condition. It retains more than 90% of its factory blued finish. There is some thinning of the finish on an area at about the mid-point of the barrel. There is a little finish loss on the bottom of the trigger guard and at the heel of the butt plate. The receiver retains about 70% of its case color on the receiver and hammer. The colors have faded a bit on the right side of the receiver. The gun has excellent mechanics. The bore is in fine condition. There appears to be some very light pitting in a short area of the bore near the chamber, but it is mostly bright. The rifling remains strong along the barrel's length. The stock is in very fine condition with just a few small dings and scratches from use. There are some tiny chips on the toe at the butt plate. There is a crisp inspector's cartouche on the left side of the wrist. There are also military inspector's initials on the barrel. This is a very nice example of a Civil War Smith Carbine.
