Description :
|
This is an original, Civil War British Enfield Pattern 1853 Rifle Musket manufactured in 1862. It is .577 caliber. This is one of the muskets run through the blockade and imported into the Confederacy during the war. It has clear markings on the comb of the stock as follow: Crown over "S H" over "G 3". This is a mark of Sinclair, Hamilton, and Company, a company created solely to handle supply of arms to the Confederacy. There is also an oval cartouche with "J.C". This combination of markings is only found on Tower marked muskets made in 1862. These markings can be seen on pages 116 and 117 of "The English Connection" by Russ A. Pritchard, Jr. and C.A. Huey. This musket is in fine condition. The blued barrel has turned a smooth light brown with traces of blue remaining around the nipple bolster. There are some small dings in the metal on the right side just ahead of the nose cap. The lock and barrel bands remain mostly blue. The brass stock furniture has an even bronze patina. The lock works perfectly, but the nipple has been flattened some by dry firing. The bore is very fine with strong rifling. The stock is in very fine condition with a few small dings and scratches from use. The stock markings remain crisp and legible. This is a very nice example of a Confederate Enfield. Stock no. 25264
