Item No.: 9420 Price : SOLD
Item : SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1871 ROLLING BLOCK U.S. ARMY RIFLE, .50-70
Description :
Here is an original, Model 1871 Rolling Block U.S. Army Rifle manufactured by Springfield Armory under a royalty agreement with the Remington Arms Company. Chambered for the .50-70 Government cartridge, these were made in 1871 and 1872. They were built with the standard Remington Rolling Block receiver and a "locking action" that drops the hammer back to half cock when the breech block is closed. Only 10,001 were produced making them relatively scarce. The government's reluctance to pay royalties to Remington led to the adoption of the Trapdoor rifle as the standard arm of the U.S. Military. This rifle is in very fine condition. The receiver retains most of its case colored finish. The finish has darkened with age. The trigger guard has developed a dark gray patina. The remainder of the gun is finished armory bright and retains most of that finish. The rear sight is blued. The rifle has an excellent bore and mechanics. The stock is in fine condition with a few small dings from use. There is a visible cartouche on the left side of the wrist. This is a nice example of a scarce U.S. Rifle. Stock no. 25220
