Item No.: 9419 Price : SOLD
Description :
This is an original, Civil War, U.S. Model 1861 Rifle Musket of .58 caliber. The Model 1861 eliminated the Maynard tape primer of the earlier Model 1855 Rifle musket and was the standard U.S. Musket of the Civil War. Though Springfield production ended in 1862, production by contractors continued right through the end of the war. It served from the opening shots to the surrender at Appomattox. This is a contract rifle musket produced by the Savage Revolving Arms Co. of Middletown, Connecticut in 1863. Savage produced a total of 25,520 muskets from 1862-1864. This particular musket went to the state of New Jersey to equip its troops. It is stamped "NJ" on the left flat of the stock and on the barrel. It is in fine condition with the barrel, lock, and furniture finished factory bright. It remains about 70% bright with some surface rusting over the remainder. The trigger guard has heavier patina. The bore is in very fine condition with sharp rifling and the mechanics are excellent. The lock works perfectly. The oil finished stock is in very fine condition with just a few small dings from use or storage. The musket is complete with sling swivels and the original ramrod. This is a shooter's musket that was fired on a regular basis. The bore was well cared for. There is a dab of red paint on the front sight. This would be perfect for a North-South Skirmish shooter. Stock no. 25280
